PS3 FAQ

Based upon the information Sony has officially released, we have compiled the following list of frequently asked questions for Playstation 3, always using reliable sources, and accurate information. Please keep in mind that none of this information is set in stone, and it is all subject to change.
When will Playstation 3 be released?

PS3 will launch on November 11, 2006 in Japan, and on November 17, 2006 in North America, Europe, and Australia.
How much will PS3 cost?

There will be two different editions of Playstation 3 - a 20 GB hard drive edition and a 60 GB hard drive edition. The 20 GB hard drive edition will cost $499 USD / 499 Euros / 59,800 yen. The 60 GB hard drive edition will cost $599 USD / 599 Euros / Undetermined Price in Yen.
Why is new about the controllers for Playstation 3?

Sony has released images of new controllers, which resemble a horseshoe shape. This has yet to be announced as the offical controller for Playstation 3, and is still labeled as a conceptual design. It is thought by many in the industry that Sony will refine the new controller for PS3. Additionally, the new controllers will be wireless, using Bluetooth 2.0 technology. They will be able to be recharged via a USB port on the PS3, and up to 7 controllers can be used at one time.

Sony has scrapped all plans for the boomerang like controller. The new controllers will be very similar to the old Dualshock 2 PS2 controllers, however they will be wireless, and also have motion sensors within them. These motion sensors will allow you to add a new dimension to your gaming, by moving the controller.

Will PS3 have a hard drive, like the Xbox 360 does?

All PS3 units will be shipped with a hard drive preinstalled, with the capacity depending on which unit you purchase.
What is “The Cell”?

“The Cell” is a new processing unit being developed by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba which will be revolutionary in speed, featuring 3.2 GHz in speed, and which will be twice as fast as the Xbox 360. It will be the primary processor in Playstation 3, and will also be the center of several other electronic devices in the near future.

Will PS3 be backward compatiable with PS2, and PS1 games?

Sony has confimed that the Playstation 3 will be compatiable with both PS2 and PS1 games.

Will PS3 be able to connect with the PSP?

Yes, the PSP will be able to wirelessly connect to the PS3. Sony has recently filed a patent for this technology. Not much more infomation other than this is known at this time.

What graphics chip will be in the PS3?

The graphics chip will be made by NVIDA, and it is currently codenamed RSX. It runs at 550 MHz, and will be capable of using all 512 mb of RAM that the PS3 will contain.
