Blu-Ray DVD vs. HD-DVD
In a recent news article, by News.com, Intel has partnered with Microsoft, supporting the HD-DVD format of next generation DVD’s. HD-DVD, which is already supported by Toshiba, HBO, NEC, Universal Studios, Warner Bros, as well as others, will be the choice of Microsoft for the up and coming Xbox 360. However, the Blu-Ray, which will be featured on Playstation 3, has been endorsed by HP, Dell, Philips, Apple, Electronic Arts, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sun, Walt Disney as well as many other major companies. Blu-Ray technology, which is expected to launch this spring, will support both a single layer 25 GB disc, and a 50 GB dual-layer disc. Toshiba has announced HD-DVD will include a 15 GB single sided disc, and a 30 GB dual-layer disc, with a target launch date of the first quarter in 2006. The two sides have held meetings the last few weeks to try to settle this dispute, and create one format, to avoid compatiability issues, however, at this time, a resolution seems doubtful with only a few months before the scheduled releases.
